Now for some interesting Paralympic facts... Did you know the first Summer Paralympic Games took place in 1960 in Rome? Then, some 400 athletes from 23 countries took part. There were 8 sports in all including snooker, fencing, field events, basketball, swimming, table tennis, archery, and the pentathlon. Initially competing athletes were only those with spinal cord injuries but since 1972 the competition began to include quadriplegic athletes, then visually impaired, amputees and eventually participants with various motor disabilities also took part. Overall, GB Paralympians have brought home over 1600 medals. 563 of those were gold. Out of the 563, only one has been won at the Winter Paralympic Games. Which incidentally only started in 1976. If you would like a handy reference to which events are happening and when, feel free to download a copy of the schedule below.
