Can I lay New Click Vinyl on 10mm Fibre Board Underlay?

Can you lay click vinyl on a fibre board underlay? We provide the answer to one of our most popular questions...

Alex Prince asked us:

"I am replacing the flooring in my open plan lounge and kitchen. I am looking at laying click vinyl as a replacement. The old laminate is damaged so I need to lift this, but the underlay is still good. I want to know if I can lay the new click vinyl on this underlay (10mm fibre board), which would offer a smooth surface to lay it on. Under this is concrete, but has many imperfections so would need smoothing, so Im trying to avoid extra work. We also want extra insulation so underlay would help with this. Would this work ok?"

"Unfortunately the Click vinyl flooring cannot be laid onto Fibre Board underlay due to it being too soft resulting in the click not holding in place correctly. If the concrete sub-floor is not in a good condition you would need to add a layer of self-levelling compound to correct this. We do sell an underlay designed for the click vinyl which is a 2mm solid rubber underlay that will enhance sound reduction and insulation in the room."
