LVT Click Vs Glue Down

29.04.2021

Not sure which to choose between LVT Click and Lvt Glue Down flooring? Check out our comparison guide here to help guide your decision.

Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) are a cost-effective alternative to natural wood or stone surfaces. LVT is a durable and water-resistant flooring that's ideal for bathroom and kitchen installations. In terms of glue down or click LVT, they both share some common similarities such as:

  • Water Resistance
  • Scuff & Stain Resistance
  • Long Residential Guarantees
  • Realistic wood-effect or stone-effect appearance

First things first, the main difference between the two is how they are installed. Glue Down LVT needs to be stuck down with a suitable self-adhesive and requires a smooth surface. Click LVT needs a smooth surface too, but it's considered easier to install as the vinyl tiles & planks click together, removing the need for adhesive. There is also Rigid Click LVT, which is a lot tougher and more forgiving to less than even subfloors.

Now that you're a little bit more informed about the two types, here are a few things you should consider when choosing either glue down or click LVT for your home.

Cost of LVT Glue Down vs LVT Click

LVT is more cost-effective than purchasing natural wooden or stone surfaces. However, the difference in cost depends greatly on which installation type you choose.

Click LVT is generally a little bit more expensive than Glue Down, and you need to take into account the cost of an underlay for the subfloor. Although, a rigid click LVT wouldn't require a separate underlay as this is already built into the floor planks.

Glue Down LVT is generally cheaper than Click LVT, but if you aren't confident with installing this type of flooring, you may incur additional costs to get a professional to lay it down for you.

Room Size

The size of your room can make a difference between which installation type you choose. Click LVT gives a much comfortable feel underfoot because of the extra thickness and underlay. However, glue down ensures that your flooring is fully adhered to the subfloor, giving it greater stability to click LVT. Though nothing is set in stone, and what you decide may come down to personal preference.

Installation of Click vs Glue Down LVT

As we mentioned earlier, laying down click or glue down LVT involves entirely different methods. If this is your first DIY project and it is an old home you are renovating then rigid click LVT would be a safer option as not only is it easy to click into place, its thickness makes it easier to fit onto a less than even subfloor. Otherwise, click LVT can be simple to install, as long as you have a smooth subfloor and a suitable underlay*.

Glue Down LVT is suited for experienced installers. You may require a professional to adhere the tiles and planks to the subfloor. This is a lot more time consuming, and the margin for error is much higher than that of click LVT.

*Always refer to the manufacturer's installation guidelines and use their recommended accessories and underlays.
